Title: Archimedes' Palimpsest

Speaker: Dr. Florence D.Fasanelli (Advisor of J. Templeton Foundation, American Association for the Advancement of Science)

Time: 7:00 pm, November 13, 2009

Venue: Lecture Hall 501, Center of Mathematical Sciences, Zhejiang University

Abstract: A unique manuscript of Archimedes(c.287 BCE-c.212 BCE) work was created in the tenth century, palimpsested in the twelfth century, found and published in the early twentieth century. Since 1998 it has been undergoing restoration and scholarly study at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore Maryland, USA. In 2008 the manuscript which contains "The Method" was found to contain more information than was previously known about the "Stomachion." Chinese mathematician Fan Chung, working with her husband Ron Graham has found 268 solutions to this puzzle.

Title: An Introduction to Mass Point Geometry

Speaker: Dr. Max Warshauer (Advisor of J. Templeton Foundation, Professor of Texas State University)

Time: 8:20 pm, November 13, 2009

Venue: Lecture Hall 501, Center of Mathematical Sciences, Zhejiang University

Abstract: This talk will cover the basic ideas of mass point geometry, beginning with old ideas from Archimedes and how these can be used to solve geometry problems. There will be problems to work on suitable for students and teachers at different levels. This includes problems we used in our qualifying test for students to attend the Primary Math World Contest (PMWC) in Hong Kong
