Shing-Tung Yau High School Mathematics Awards

Mathematical Sciences play a prominent and important role in science and technology, as well as human resource competition, which are also gradually and widely applied in the science and technology in our daily life. We believe that youngsters should have excellent mathematical education in order to meet the challenges in the future. It was advocated early in the west that students should be fostered and encouraged to have the science research ability and therefore awards were set up. Siemens Westinghouse Science and Technology Competition, for example, is a special mathematics-related research award facing high school students. It focuses on innovation and practice, encourages team spirit and promotes the science research enthusiasm of high school students in the US. Many previous awardees later became famous scientists.

Professor Shing-Tung Yau, a world renowned mathematician, initiated to hold a mathematics competition for high school students around the world. He hopes to encourage the mathematical research and development,to stimulate youngsters’ interest in mathematics and most importantly to cultivate mathematical talents from all over the world.

Mr. Dongsheng Chen, Chairman of Taikang Life Insurance Company Ltd., gave high praise and full support to Professor Yau’s idea. Professor Yau and Mr. Chen have met many times in Beijing and Hangzhou and talked about the details for the set-up of an award for the high school students. Finally, it was agreed that the two parties cooperated and set up “Shing-Tung Yau High School Mathematics Awards”.

How to Join

Students who intend to participate may form their teams and complete the initial registration through the registration webpage of Shing-Tung Yau High School Mathematics Awards.

A team should select a suitable mathematical research topic and perform an independent study. The team may submit an optional outline before May 15, 2008.

Each team must finalize its registration by providing exact information of the team and a research outline through the registration website on or before June 1, 2008.

Each team should submit a research report, written in English or Chinese, (Chinese must has an English abstract) before September 1, 2008 (the deadline will be announced shortly), through the designated internet channel.

Questions and Answers

1.What is the difference of competition format between Shing-Tung Yau High School Mathematics Awards and the International Mathematical Olympiad?

The Awards encourages innovation, so that students are free to choose the subject and do the research in the open-ended competition. Finally, they will submit their dissertations. Different from the format of The International Olympic Math Competition, The Awards attaches more importance to the overall qualities of innovation, teamwork spirit etc.

2.Since it is an open-ended competition, how will you prevent plagiarism and ensure the fairness?

Each submitted dissertation will go through three stages of assessment. In each stage, experts in the corresponding field will be invited to make rigorous reviews. In the final stage, there will be the live oral defense and presentation. Only after all the three stages the most outstanding recipient can be selected for The Awards.
